un.jpg 10 February 2009. At the current session of the Scientific-Technical Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS), ESPI reported about its recent activities relevant to the work of this global forum.

Being a permanent observer to UNCOPUOS, ESPI regularly reports about its activities, which are of particular relevance to the work of this Committee and its two Subcommittees. In ESPI’s current statement (download here) the activities are highlighted, which focus on issues related to sustainable development and the governance of space activities on a global scale.

The links of ESPI with UNCOPUOS are very close in various ways, since reporting at the sessions, which take place at the UN Office in Vienna, is not the only way of interaction. ESPI cooeprates with the Secretariat of the Committee, which is the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs and has already invited numerous UNCOPUOS delegates to attend ESPI events as speakers or contributor to publications. In particular the recent conference on “The Fair and Responsible Use of Space: an International Perspective", which took place at ESPI on 20-21 November 2008, answered to numerous questions discussed in UNCOPUOS and saw besides the Chairman of UNCOPUOS a number delegates from industrialized as well as developing countries as speakers.
