copy of _eisc_2010_romania.jpg 17 May 2010. The Romanian Presidency of the European Interparliamentary Space Conference (EISC) organised a workshop with the active involvement of ESPI in its function to support the presidencies of EISC.

Under the lead of Liana Dumitrescu, Chairperson of the Romanian Parliament Subcommittee for Space, this year’s EISC is conducted under Romanian chairmanship. It comprises a workshop and a full conference. This demonstrates the particular engagement of this presidency, supported by the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA), under its Head Marius-Ioan Piso. The workshop taking place in Romanian Parliament brought together delegations from member parliamentarian groups and initiated a dialogue with experts, representatives of stakeholders and industry.

The first two presentations in the workshop dealt with the issue of space and security. The speakers were Sylvia Kainz-Huber, Deputy Head of Unit, Space Policy and Coordination, European Commissions DG Enterprise and Tomaž Lovrenčič, Director European Union Satellite Centre. They touched upon strategies to shape a strategy in this field and the efficient use of satellite data to provide security to Europe in various fields. Following this first part, presentations were given by Giulio Barbolani di Montauto, ESA Brussels Office on ESA’s Role in European Space Context and Matxalen Sánchez Aranzamendi, ESPI Resident Fellow on the effects of space legislation and regulations on the European space sector. The workshop was held under the guidance of EISC Chairperson Liana Dumitrescu. The sessions were co-moderated by ROSA’s President Marius-Ioan Piso and ESPI’s Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl. Considerable time was provided for discussions and open exchanges.

The workshop was the first step of ESPI’s support for the current Presidency of EISC. The main tasks were the preparation of the agenda and the coordination of preparatory activities in cooperation with the local organising staff of the Romanian Parliament. ESPI’s involvement is lead by Resident Fellow Christina Giannopapa, who is in charge of parliamentary affairs in the Institute.

The plenary conference of EISC will take place this year on 25-26 October in Bucharest. It will follow up on the discussions conducted at the workshop and will focus on the issues of space and security, space for economic development and the reflection of the role of EISC in the European space context. For this event, the Presidency and the member parliamentary groups are aiming high in further strengthening EISC and its visibility and relevance. They intend to add a stronger representation of EISC through i.a. a more intensive presentation of the resolution which is expected to be adopted in October.
