18 September 2012. ESPI, in its capacity as IAP Ambassador Platform for Central and Eastern Europe, was invited to give a presentation on the use of satellite applications in the field of civil protection, at the international Galileo User Forum workshop in Prague.

The international Galileo User Forum on "Utilising GNSS Technology for Crisis Management" was organised by the Ministry of Transport of the Czech Republic. The event aimed at bringing together civil protection end users, industry representatives and European institutions in order to discuss the added value of space applications, especially satellite navigation, in the field of crisis management.

ESPI Resident Fellow Erich Klock gave a presentation on “The use of satellite applications to enhance Civil Protection operational effectiveness” (download here). This presentation built on the outcome of the ESPI workshop on “Space for Civil Protection”, which took place in May 2011, and the ESPI report 37 entitled “Space applications for Civil Protection” (download here). This presentation highlighted the added value of space as well as current shortcomings in the use of satellite-based services for civil protection. It underlined that dedicated efforts are specifically needed in interoperability, availability, cost effectiveness, and best practice adherence.
