23 April 2010. One ESPI Research Fellow leaves after a long and fruitful term and two research staff join the Institute.
Wolfgang Rathgeber, who has been with ESPI for more than four years and who shaped the Institute’s research programme on space and security, has ended his most successful term. In the course of his stay, he prepared numerous reports (ESPI Reports 2, 3, 10, 13, 16 and 18) and papers like ESPI Perspectives and Memoranda together with other think tanks as well as book publications (as co-editor of the Yearbook on Space Policy and the recent volume on the Fair and Responsible Use of Space). He was not only a prolific writer but also a highly respected speaker at a large number of events. He has now been seconded by DLR to join the Security Strategy and Partnership Development Office at ESA, where he will continue to work in the field of space and security and provide ideas and inputs for this strategic field.

ESPI is pleased to welcome as a new Resident Fellow ESA astronaut Gerhard Thiele. His first assignments at ESPI will be the preparation of a memorandum on the rationale for human spaceflight, which he will conduct together with astronauts from around the world. He furtheron will be involved in steering the planning of an ESPI conference on space and European autonomy, foreseen for November this year. Gerhard Thiele headed the ESA Astronauts Division at the European Astronauts Centre (EAC) before joining ESPI. A few weeks ago, he celebrated the 10th anniversary of his spaceflight STS-99 on board Space Shuttle “Endeavour”. Gerhard Thiele brings in a wealth of knowledge, experience and contacts to the Institute together with highest dedication to space.
Working now under the assignment as Project Manager, Spyros Pagkratis, who joined the Institute at the beginning of the year, takes over the responsibility for the annual report Space Policies, Issues and Trends. He will further prepare the first part of the next Yearbook and become a co-editor for this volume. Spyros Pagkratis holds a Diploma in History (Athens University) as well as Master Degrees in International Relations History (Paris University 4 Sorbonne) and Defence Policy and Defence Industrial Planning (Paris University 2 Panthéon-Assas). Before joining ESPI, he worked with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Western European Union and EADS Astrium Space Transportation gaining valuable experience in security as well as industry related space matters.
