24 January 2008. During a visit at the Space Policy Institute of George Washington University, the directors of ESPI and SPI-GWU agreed on further intensifying joint cooperation.
The Space Policy Institute at the Elliott School of International Affairs of the George Washington University, Washington DC, has a long tradition of being, at the same time, a leading academic institution and an influential think tank in the United States. Links between ESPI and SPI-GWU were created with the first conceptualizations of ESPI. SPI’s long time Director, John Logsdon, has been member of the search committee for ESPI’s first head and has during the past years cooperated with ESPI inter alia as a speaker at an ESPI Space Breakfast and a contributor to the first ESPI Yearbook on Space Policy, to be published in May 2008.
At his visit to Washington, ESPI’s Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl has been invited to address the students of SPI-GWU and speak at the conference on “The State of Space Security”, where he gave a presentation on Space Traffic Management (download here). Cooperation between the two institutes will be intensified in the future for example by issuing a joint memorandum on transatlantic space cooperation, as the two directors announced at this occasion.
