26 March 2011. Hosted by ESPI, the Board of Directors of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL) held its spring meeting at the Institute’s premises.

The International Institute of Space Law (IISL) is the globally leading association of space lawyers and space law-related institutions. It comprises more than 400 elected members. It is led by Tanja Masson-Zwaan and its operations are governed by a Board of Directors with members from all continents. Being a member of this Board, ESPI’s Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl invited the organ to hold its spring meeting this year in Vienna, in order to provide the members the opportunity to participate in the session of the UNCOPUOS Legal Subcommittee held there. It was the second time, after 2009, that the Board met at ESPI.

Cooperation of ESPI with IISL has been growing during the past years. One highlight particularly to be mentioned was the workshop on regulatory issues in Earth observation of April 2010 (related webnews here). IISL also contributed a feature for ESPRAN Newsletter 9  of September 2010 (download here). Recently, ESPI resident Fellow Matxalen Sánchez Aranzamendi was elected member to IISL. Regarding future cooperation, a number of IISL members will already speak at the joint event ESPI is hosting together with the Russian delegation to UNCOPUOS-LSC on 4 April 2011.

ESPI was also actively involved in the organization of the IISL/ECSL Symposium at the UNCOPUOS Legal Subcommittee meeting on 28 March 2011, which is one of the most visible activities of IISL besides the International Astronautical Congress. For that Symposium (programme here), Kai-Uwe Schrogl was the chair of the organizing committee and Matxalen Sánchez Aranzamendi was the coordinator for the event.
