poster 28 February 2013. On 18 February ESPI hosted an evening event at which the topic of the use of Earth observation data for marine eco-system management was broached by a number of international experts.

The well attended event saw presentations by Dr Adigun Ade Abiodun, former Chairman of COPUOS and member of the GOOS Africa Alliance, Barbara Ryan, the director of the Group on Earth Observation Secretariat, Vincent Gabaglio from Eumetsat, and finally a wrap-up statement was made by Ambassador Walter Lichem. During the ensuing discussions interesting points were made on how to truly reach decision makers and the part of the public for whom the data could bring substantive benefit. The point was also made that local populations must control local futures, yet particularly for marine ecosystem management there is a boundary transcending element which also showcases the interconnectedness and inter-regional and global responsibilities. Finally the role of the UN and of COPUOS was discussed, especially as a focus for governance topics.
