copy of iap.jpg 3 May 2010. With the launch of a Community Portal, ESPI has officially started its activities as an Ambassador Platform for the Central and Eastern European Region for ESA’s Integrated Applications Promotion (IAP) programme.

ESPI has been tasked with the function as an Ambassador Platform for the IAP Programme for the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region The main focus of the IAP programme is to develop viable applications and services which demonstrate the benefits of utilising and integrating different space assets (e.g. Satellite Communication, Earth Observation, Satellite Navigation, etc.). The IAP programme is a user-driven programme initiated by the European Space Agency ESA to fulfil the needs and expectations of various users with the help of existing space and non-space systems. This will assure a better exploitation of such systems and will lead to new operational services.

The objective of the Ambassador Platform, managed by ESPI Resident Fellow Erich Klock, is to assist the IAP programme in spreading awareness for potential stakeholders in this programme, in the region of Central and Eastern Europe. ESPI provides efficient support to ESA with its competence as the leading European institution in the field of space policy research.

Together with ESA, ESPI has launched the IAP Community Portal for the CEE region. This portal is intended to be gateway for actors from CEE countries who are interested in Integrated Applications. It offers a good opportunity to exchange information (e.g. documents, presentations), to publish articles and ongoing projects as well as to inform about upcoming workshops and events.

One key awareness activity of ESPI is the organisation of workshops within the CEE region in order to promote IAP to relevant decision-makers and user communities, to define gaps in existing services that can be filled by space assets, and to present new applications and services. An important goal of these workshops is to bring the various users and stakeholders together as well as to inform them of funding possibilities. The first awareness event will be held on 1 and 2 July 2010 at ESPI in Vienna. The goal of this two-day event is to present the IAP programme and the Ambassador Platform for the CEE region as well as to bring together high-ranking representatives from CEE countries in order to discuss their expectations and needs and the benefits, which can be derived from IAP.
