7 March 2008. After having taken office a few weeks ago, the Director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), Mazlan Othman, visited ESPI to discuss cooperation between the two Vienna-based institutions.
UNOOSA is the directorate in the UN General Secretariat running the UN Space Applications Programme, coordinating the space activities in the UN system and servicing the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). Prof. Mazlan Othman recently became Director of UNOOSA, after she had already held that post from 1999-2002.
Visiting ESPI, Mazlan Othman met the staff to discuss current issues and challenges of UN space activities and investigated with ESPI’s Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl prospects for cooperation between the two institutions based in Vienna. Of particular interest to UNOOSA are the activities of ESPI related to the benefits derived from space applications. They have also recently been presented at the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of UNCOPUOS (webnews here). In this field, UNOOSA is interested to cooperate closely with ESPI. The two organizations also intend to link their public information systems and documentations so that users and interested researchers can benefit from this.
Furthermore, Mazlan Othman will contribute to the next Yearbook on Space Policy 2007/2008 with an article on the 50 years of space activities and the global benefits derived from the peaceful uses of outer space with particular reference to Malaysia.
