8 April 2011. Upon invitation by the project leaders, ESPI participated at the “Prospects and Challenges for European Space Policy” workshop held in Stockholm in the framework of the “C-Space” EU Framework Programme Project.

C-Space (Conditions for Space Policy and Related Action Plan Consolidation in Europe) is a research project on European space policy funded under the 7th Framework Programme and coordinated by the Paris-based Foundation for Strategic Research (FRS). The project is intended to provide European Union decision makers, institutions and the public with a comprehensive vision of the European Space Policy (ESP), in order to support its elaboration and implementation, as well as to facilitate its acceptation by European citizens. The study of the different aspects to the ESP is conducted by the C-Space group of partners, which include FRS, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) of Paris, the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI), the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) of Rome, the Royal Aeronautical Society (RAeS) of London and the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA). All participating institutions have links to ESPI either through institutional membership or membership in ESPRAN, the European Space Policy Research and Academic Network, operated by ESPI (link to the ESPRAN page here).

In order to help the C-Space group to develop their arguments and recommendations a one-day workshop was held on 8 April 2011 in Stockholm, on “Prospects and Challenges for European Space Policy”. The workshop was intended to assemble European and national representatives of the space sector (e.g. space agencies, institutions and operators) in order to present the project’s key findings and results to date and to gather comments and inputs aimed at improving the final C-Space report. Participation at the workshop included officials and space policy experts from key European stake holders. ESPI was represented by Resident Fellow Spyros Pagkratis, who was invited to contribute inputs and analysis to the workshop’s discussions regarding ESP.

Earlier during the same week, ESPI Resident Fellow Spyros Pagkratis was invited to the morning show of the Austrian national radio broadcasting station FM4. He was interviewed by the show’s hosts Stuart Freeman and Nina Hochrainer on ESPI’s mission and activities, as well as on recent developments in the area of commercial space flight and space tourism. The interview was part of FM4’s thematic week dedicated to spaceflight, in the context of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight. Spyros Pagkratis’ interview was part of ESPI’s continuing outreach activities. Another recent example in this context was ESPI’s partnership of the ongoing art exhibition “Space-about a dream”, at the Kunsthalle Wien (related webnews here).
