6thiaa_regional_meeting.jpg 9 May 2008. For the first time, the Regional Meeting of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) for Germany, Austria and Switzerland took place outside Germany, hosted by ESPI in Vienna.

Among the regional activities of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) the ones for Germany, Austria and Switzerland have, during the past years, been particularly strong. Organized by Hermann Strub (the IAA Regional Secretary), Heinz Stoewer and Kai-Uwe Schrogl with the support of Nina Venten, six meetings have so far been held on an annual basis in locations like Cologne, Bremen and Munich. For the 6th meeting, ESPI's Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl had invited the group to Vienna, where more than twenty Academicians from agencies, industry and research as well as numerous guests assembled. Among the guests were also a number of professors from Viennese universities teaching astronomy, geodesy or law. The Meeting, which was sponsored by the German Aerospace Center DLR, was moderated by Heinz Stoewer.

The agenda comprised (following an introduction on ESPI by Kai-Uwe Schrogl) on the one hand presentations on Austrian space activities (by Michel Jakob, substituting Klaus Pseiner, on the current Austrian space policy and by Otto Koudelka on Austria's first nano satellite TUGSAT) and on the other hand presentations on the recent achievements regarding Europe's contribution to the International Space Station ISS (by Rüdiger Kledzig on the initial Columbus operations and by Nicolas Chamussy on ATV's first flight). Lastly, Rupert Gerzer, member of the IAA Board of Trustees, reported on recent developments in the Academy. At the end of the meeting, the function of the IAA Regional Secretary was passed form Hermann Strub, whose achievements and contributions during the past years were highly appreciated, to Karlheinz Kreuzberg, who is the Head of Cabinet in ESA.
