11 September 2012. ESPI was invited to contribute to, and moderate, a session on “International Space Situational Awareness and Collaboration” at the first AMOS SSA Policy Forum that was convened in Maui, Hawaii.

ESPI’s Resident Fellow Jana Robinson introduced and moderated Session II entitled “International Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and Collaboration” at the AMOS SSA Policy Forum, part of the 13th Advanced Maui Optical and Space Surveillance Technologies Conference (AMOS). This conference is a leading technical event related to space situational awareness (SSA) globally. The AMOS SSA Policy Forum represents a new addition to the AMOS Conference and included three separate sessions with senior government and industry participants. Beside the international session, the other two panels covered the current status of SSA in the U.S., and commercial and civil SSA.

Session II sought to assess the current status of SSA development in Europe and Japan, including understanding the levels of SSA priority among other space-related objectives; identifying the challenges of SSA data-sharing and other obstacles to establishing a meaningful collaboration on SSA - and assessing the optimal avenues for mutually-beneficial partnerships with the U.S. through the leveraging of common goals. The  Session II speakers included Mr. Susumu Yoshitomi, Executive Director of the Japan Space Forum; Col. Franck Schrottenloher, Chief of Space Environment Mastery Office of the French Joint Space Command; LTC Lothar Pichler from the German Space Situational Awareness Center; and Maj Giovanni Falcucci, Italian Ministry of Defence Staff.
