logo-leidenuniv-screen 16 May 2013. On 16 May the International Institute of Air and Space Law and the Department of Latin American Studies of Leiden University opened the doors for a symposium on the Legal and Policy Aspects of Space Cooperation between Europe and the BRICS Countries. The ESPI Director, Peter Hulsroj, made a presentation on Cooperation with BRICS - Space as  trendsetter or follower.

The symposium on Europe - BRICS cooperation in space on 16 May in Leiden attracted very good and wide participation from students, academics, space practitioners and diplomats. Presentations were made on the general BRICS construction, on intra-BRICS cooperation in space and on Europe-BRICS cooperation in this field. Peter Hulsroj made a presentation in which he analysed whether space and Europe could be a bridge-builder between the established space powers of the West and the BRICS, and whether in the exploration of the universe a cooperative scheme can be envisaged or whether the global community is inevitably on the path to a new space race.
A summary report, presentations and photos can be found on the Leiden University website:  http://law.leiden.edu/organisation/publiclaw/iiasl/news/brics-presentations.html
