25 April 2014. From April 14 to 16 2014, ESPI Director Peter Hulsroj and Resident Fellow Alexandra Bonnefoy (ESPI responsible for the EISC Secretariat) participated in the 16th EISC Thematic Workshop held in Toulouse in France.
This year’s French Presidency, supported by ESPI, organized a workshop in Toulouse around the theme ‘Communication of Cultural Avenues for Space’. The workshop was held over the course of three days, and was divided between visits of space-related sites and a round table on cultural avenues.
A welcome reception was given at the Town Hall of Toulouse hosted by the Mayor of the City, Mr. Jean-Luc Moudenc, with presentations by the Mayor, the French Secretary of State for Higher Education and Research, Ms. Geneviève Fioraso, and this year’s EISC Chairman Mr. Bertrand Auban.
The work session, at the Cité de l’Espace, was introduced by State Secretary Fioraso. Among the presentations given by the panelists, the following themes were discussed: the potential and successful examples of cultural institutions promoting space (close work and promotion with school children, summer programs, etc.), the use of space for the creation of art pieces and its influence on creative processes, and the role and importance of communication on the benefits of space. The round table was followed by a presentation of the ESA-EISC internship program, by Ms. Dominique Tilmans (Chair of the Belgian Parliamentary Space Group), and the parliamentarians were then invited to tour the Cité de l’Espace, followed by a dinner reception.
The rest of the workshop was dedicated to the visits of space-related sites, including a visit to the French national space agency, CNES, and the industrial sites of Airbus and Thales. The Parliamentarians were shown a wide variety range of products and services, including the ATV control room, satellites being built, as well as the assembly line of the A380 and the A400M.
