25 April 2013. On March 25th 2013 ESPI Director Peter Hulsroj and Resident Fellow Alexandra Bonnefoy (ESPI responsible for the EISC Secretariat) participated in the 15th EISC Thematic Workshop held in Transinne and Redu in Belgium.
This year’s Belgium Presidency organized a workshop in Transinne around the theme of small, micro, nano satellites and cubesats, and more specifically the hands on experience for aerospace engineering students. Among the main points discussed during the workshop were: the multipurpose function that these satellites represent for a variety of areas such as education and entrepreurship, the commercial potential of smaller satellites, the role they may have for the European space identity. Last but not least the important role the parliamentarians have to play in promoting the role of space in everyday life and for the future of humankind was addressed. The workshop was followed by a visit of both the Space Centre in Transinne, where the workshop was held, and the ESA Redu Centre. The event was concluded by an address by the Chair of the Belgian Space Working Group and Chair of the 15th EISC, Senator Dominique Tilmans.
