13 July 2011. ESPI was invited to introduce the workshop sessions of a top-level event in the European Parliament, which was addressed by the Chairman of the ITRE Committee, the Vice President of the European Commission and the Director General of ESA.

The Workshop “Space technologies in support of European policies – transport, environment and agriculture” took place on 13 July 2011 in the European Parliament. It was organized by the Policy Department A – Economic and Scientific Policy of the EP with the support of ESPI. Following keynotes by Industry Research and Energy (ITRE) Chairman MEP Herbert Reul, EC Vice President Antonio Tajani and ESA Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain, ESPI introduced the workshop sessions and the conference theme. The presentation (download here) was given by the Institute’s Director Kai-Uwe Schrogl and Resident Fellow Christina Giannopapa.

The workshop was the highest-ranking appearance of ESPI so far and can be seen in the line of the recent activities of the Institute in the European Parliament, which saw a workshop in December 2010 (related webnews here) and May 2011 (related webnews here), organized by Christina Giannopapa, who also provided the support to the present event. ESPI’s participation provided the opportunity to showcase the Institute’s recent results on the European space flagship programmes’ benefits to European policies, which is of particular relevance to the ongoing debate on space in the European Union system and its financial framework.
