1 July 2010. The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) joined ESPI as its first member institution from the Central and Eastern European region.
Having already cooperated for a number of years with the Institute, the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) has become an institutional member of ESPI from 1 July 2010, following unanimous agreement by the Institute’s current membership. The Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) was established in 1991 and reorganised by a Government Decision in 1995 as an independent public institution under the auspices of the Ministry of Research and Technology (actually, the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sport). ROSA is the national co-ordinating body of the space activities.
The missions of ROSA are to promote and coordinate development and national efforts in the field, and, as a Government representative, to promote international cooperation. In particular, ROSA is authorised to establish research and development centres oriented on specific objectives of the Romanian Space Programme. ROSA is developing its own research and development projects. On behalf of the Government, ROSA is the national representative in the cooperative agreements with international organizations, such as European Space Agency (ESA) and Committee on Space Research (COSPAR), as well as bilateral governmental agreements. Together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROSA is representing Romania in the sessions of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Use of Outer Space (COPUOS) and its Subcommittees.
The acting President (since 2004) and Chief Executive Officer (since 1995) of ROSA is Prof. Dr. Marius-Ioan Piso, The Honorary President is the Romanian cosmonaut Dr. Dumitru Dorin Prunariu. Both personalities have close relations with ESPI as signified by ESPI’s support of the Romanian Presidency in the European Interparliamentary Space Conference 2010 (see related webnews on the EISC Workshop in Bucharest in May 2010 here) and the keynote speech by Dumitru Dorin Prunariu in his capacity as Chairman of UNCOPUOS at ESPI’s recent exhibition opening (see related webnews here).
