Situational Awareness for the Environment: Scientific and Policy Aspects in Environmental Monitoring and Control

4 November 2024

Environmental monitoring, as in many other disciplines, can today rely on a broad spectrum of observables, detected with a wide variety of sensors, in turn placed in dimensional scales ranging from microscopy to satellite observation. The analysis of such a complex system can be approached using Situational Awareness methods, intended as perception and collection of given elements in an environment, in a given time and space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their status in the near future.  The science of Situational Awareness, its application in the environment control, its empowerment with space observations, the policies involved and some specific real-life case studies will be discussed in a round table by Prof. Massimiliano Lega (Parthenope University, Naples), world expert in situational awareness methods for the environment, responsible of the SAfE project currently in scientific tour in various international institutes, Gabriele Redigonda, research  fellow of the European Space Policy Institute with expertise in space observations related to environment and clima, Roberta Teta, Professor  at the Department of Pharmacy at University of Naples Federico II, and Fabrizio Curcio, former head of Civil Protection Department of the italian Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri.

This event will also be an opportunity to discuss the research outcomes related to climate resilience and food security in the Mediterranean region from recent work conducted by ESPI.

The agenda of the event will be as follows:
