ESPI Welcomes Kyriaki Goni as its First Artist-in-Residence for Space Policy

The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) is proud to welcome artist, Kyriaki Goni to its team as its first artist-in-residence in the field of space policy, and to serve as a host institution for the S+T+ARTS Ec(h)o Residency Programme.

ESPI, in collaboration with S+T+ARTS with funding from the European Commission, has invited Ms. Goni to respond to the S+T+ARTS Ec(h)o Residency Programme Challenge #4: “European Space Policy in the Age of Sustainability” throughout 2025.

About Kyriaki

Kyriaki Goni’s multimedia installations critically and poetically touch upon political, affective and environmental aspects of big tech. Listening to the deep past, she explores possible futures, terrestrial and extraterrestrial landscapes, other forms and entanglements of intelligences such as machines or plants, alternative networks and infrastructures. Her installations seek to connect the local with the (inter)planetary, the speculative fabulation with the scientific contemplating on possible futures and new worlds of radical coexistence and care. Her work is shown internationally and has been published in several art and tech journals.

Ms. Goni holds a BA and an MSc in Social and Cultural Anthropology (Panteion University Athens, Leiden University NL), as well as a BA in Fine Arts and an MA in Digital Arts (Athens School of Fine Arts). As an extension of her practice, she frequently lectures on infrastructures & networks, AI image generation, image & datasets among other things (Master of Photography AKTO Art & Design College Greece Middlesex, UK, Master of Architecture University of Patras Greece, HEAD Geneva).

Considering the increased access for humans in outer space around our planet and the intensification of space exploration in our solar system, the foremost challenge, at ESPI, lies in elevating space exploration in the eyes of policymakers and illustrating how space technologies can contribute to solving pressing societal and environmental challenges.

With the imminent launch of the ESPI Centre for Excellence for Space and Sustainability (CESS) in early 2025, Ms. Goni will have access to unparalleled resources and opportunities to explore the intersection between European space policy and climate action, as well as sustainability initiatives. Moreover, the residency will delve into how these synergies can drive the triple transition impact—Digital, Green, and Social—by leveraging sustainable and human-centered technologies.

Space is currently part of our everyday life. Many of us may not realize that but this is the case. It might look far away in distance or even in time, but decisions that are being made for space have a direct impact on our very present here on Earth. I am excited to be the first-ever artist-in-residence at the European Space Policy Institute. Working with ESPI will allow me to gain further insights into space technology as well as space policy and diplomacy. I firmly believe that art can create a space for different stakeholders to discuss and interact with notions that might seem distant and difficult. Storytelling and world-building, which are main parts of my practice, are of great importance for this residency. What kind of worlds do we envision, what kind of futures do we want? How can different nations and groups collaborate for coexistence in outer space? How can non-western stakeholders and knowledge inform the narrative? What kind of rituals could be part of the connection with space? What kind of rituals could be helpful to understand past mistakes and avoid them in the present and future? I am very much focused on the process of art making. I am looking forward to closely interacting and cooperating with ESPI during this process. Through this process I hope to reach out to a broader audience and to be part of the broader discussion on space technologies, Earth Observation, the impact on Earth and the possibilities of including these technologies in current climate emergencies.

Kyriaki Goni ESPI Artist in Residence

This residency will allow ESPI to explore new perspectives for how space policy, advocacy, and track II diplomacy intersect with our mission vis- à-vis the wider space ecosystem. For us, it's the dynamics and positive energy of the process coming together across disciplines that drives us in our purpose and stimulates joint action. It is all part of the idea that ESPI can be a forum for debate, trust building, engagement, research, and education - in Europe and for Europe as a partner to the world.
