On 14 March 2025, ESPI Director H. Ludwig Moeller sat down with the Bertelsmann Foundation‘s Tony Silberfeld for Episode 2 of the Transatlantic Transition 2025 podcast under the theme: “Transatlantic Relations in Orbit and Beyond“.
You can listen to the full episode here.
The episode looked at pathways for future transatlantic relations in space and addressed:
- Foundations of the deep and multifaceted transatlantic relations in space built on long-standing partnerships and efforts, such as satellite meteorology (e.g. NOAA-EUMETSAT), Earth observation, satellite navigation (e.g., GPS and Galileo compatibility), and science and exploration (including on the ISS and in multiple other programmes);
- Emerging questions about the future of this dynamic in light of political developments on both sides of the Atlantic and on the global stage;
- Paradigm shift in relation to the role of private actors, specifically in the context of public-private dynamics;
- Evolution of European ambition for autonomy and capabilities, especially ahead of key decisions in the forthcoming period concerning ESA’s 2025 Ministerial Council and the EU’s Multi-Annual Financial Framework, towards a more balanced partnership built on shared values.
In this new internet age of space – where satellites power everything from agriculture to autonomous vehicles – the question isn’t just what Europe can do with the US, but what both can achieve together for the wider, collective benefit on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond.
