Space Venture 2024: Global Investment Dynamics

In 2024, the global space sector attracted €6.9 billion, marking a 6% year-on-year increase and a partial recovery from the downturn observed in 2023. Notably, for the first time since 2019, the U.S. attracted less than half of global investment, while China and Europe together accounted for 50%, each hitting record highs.

Europe’s space sector experienced a breakthrough year, attracting €1.5 billion – the highest annual amount on record and a 56% increase over 2023. This surge was largely driven by heightened interest in security-focused ventures, which accounted for 40% of total European investment, underpinned by significant public backing. Indeed, over 80% of the capital secured in Europe came from public or mixed investor consortia. Among the standout deals, Safran’s €220 million acquisition of Preligens reflects a growing intersection of space, defence, and strategic autonomy.

Across the globe, China also posted impressive figures, securing a record €1.9 billion in 2024 – a result of surging investment in satellite communications. While the U.S. remains a global leader, its share has continued to decline, with investment falling at a -3% CAGR since 2019 despite sustained growth in public space budgets. In contrast, Europe has seen a steady increase in private investment, supported directly by public institutions operating as co-investors.
