Rationale & Context

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of ESPI on 25 September 2023, the Centre of Excellence for Space and Sustainability (CESS) was established in cooperation with the Austrian Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation & Technology (BMK).

BMK’s Head of Innovation & Technology, Henriette Spyra and ESPI Director, Hermann Ludwig Moeller, sign the announcement of the creation of the CESS at ESPI’s 20th Anniversary Event in the Austrian Parliament.

Both the Earth environment and the orbital environment have seen grave degradations and rising pollution, which threaten their ecosystems and generate risks and opportunities for the space sector and beyond. The Austrian Space Strategy’s main objective is to make Austria a pioneer and committed actor on the issue of sustainable development on Earth and in space.

The Austrian Space Strategy 2030+ “People, Climate and Economy: Space is for Everyone” states that “space and sustainability” will be established as a core topic at ESPI.

In collaboration with BMK, the CESS will be established at ESPI, fostering impactful policy-making in Austria, in Europe and globally.

The Centre of Excellence is foreseen to be established in September 2024 and the work conducted within the framework of the CESS will props up two of ESPI’s research themes: Green & Sustainable Societies and Space as an Asset. Stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, the flyer for the CESS can be found here.
