(05/02/2024) COPUOS Side Event – The Strategic Value of Earth Observation: Maximizing the Benefits for Governments and the International Community

5 February 2024, 18:30 - 22:30 ESPI, Vienna, Austria

Join us for a side event of the 61st Session of UN COPUOS STSC on 5 February 2024 at the new ESPI premises on the topic of The Strategic Value of Earth Observation.

Although Earth Observation activities have undergone significant structural and applicative dynamics changes, mostly reflected by a greater use of satellite data and information, the complete recognition of the domain by a wider community still seems to be limited. Thus, it may naturally restrict the development of new innovative use cases in broader application sectors.

Agenda Item 5 of the 61st session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the UN COPUOS combines a set of previous topics together to form a new merged item entitled “Space for Sustainable Development: Technology and its Applications, Including the United Nations Programme on Space Applications”. This topic largely considers matters relating to the development and benefits of remote sensing capabilities for societies. Furthermore, Agenda Item 7 specifically delves into the examination of the role and value of space-based information for disaster management and emergency response.

Given that context, and thanks to the participation of international panelists, the joint ESPI-ISPRS evening event aims to facilitate an informal yet substantive dialogue on the global opportunities and challenges that lie ahead and provide forward-looking views on prospective ways to best leverage the Earth Observation revolution within the international community.

Refreshments at the event are kindly offered by ESPI and ISPRS.

Please note that this is an in-person event. Participation is open to all delegates to the 61st session of UN COPUOS STSC. A limited number of seats are available to the broader public on a first come, first served basis.

All participants are kindly requested to register.

The programme for the event can be found here.
