Reinforcing dialogue with Latin America and the Caribbean

On April 20, 2024, the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI), in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Argentina and the National Commission on Space Activities (CONAE), organised the 1st Inter-Regional Space Policy Dialogue Dialogue between Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Held at the Argentine Embassy, the event brought together government and space agency representatives from both regions, with over 30 participants representing 18 different countries and international organisations. The Dialogue was organised under ESPI’s Vienna Space Diplomat Initiative.

The dialogue’s topic was: “Regional Space Cooperation for Earth’s Sustainability” This event aimed to explore the beneficial impacts of space activities on global sustainability efforts and was a major step in ESPI’s ambition to support a strong Europe as a partner to the World, as outlined in the ESPI.2040 vision “Space for Prosperity, Peace and Future Generations”.

Speakers from the Latin American region included:

  • Kesniel Bravo from the Mexican Space Agency,
  • Rocío Narváez from Ecuador’s Instituto Geográfico Militar, and
  • Raúl Kulichevsky, the Executive Director of CONAE, Argentina.

European perspectives were provided by:

  • Margit Mischkulnig from BMK,
  • Carlos García Sacristán from the Spanish Space Agency, and
  • Martin Reynders from DLR.

The ensuing roundtable discussion emphasised the critical need for enhanced public-private partnerships in developing space policies, the role of space data in driving economic development across sectors, and the importance of integrating space technology into broader policy agendas to maximise its impact on sustainable development.
